Exercise: An Hour and a half of brisk walking (courtesy of Kori Brown), and 30 minutes of jogging (courtesy of Mr. Whiteley)

Notes: In case you haven't noticed, eating enough calories is hard for me. In fact, I think it's a big reason why I've been gaining weight. My metabolism has just slowed down so much because I eat on average of 1000-1500 calories a day, which isn't good.

Also, I'm shooting for a diet where I have 40% protein 40% carbs and 20% fats. Obviously I'm eating too many carbs... or just not enough protein.

Thoughts?

  1. I would decrease your carb intake even more If your trying to shed the fat. 50% protein, 30% fat and 20% carbs. If you stick to that you will see that fat melt away on your body. Carbs ultimately turn into sugar. The best time to eat them is right when you wake up ie a 1/2 cup of oatmeal or right after a workout. Load up on the protein and veggies and good fat is NOT bad for you! I want to help!!! Let me know if you have any questions, seriously!

  2. The official FDA recommendation is roughly 50% carbs, 25% fats, 25% protein, but I saw a movie called Fat Head that suggested we worry WAY too much about fats. Fats and proteins, eaten together, tend to improve our metabolism. The guy in Fat Head lost several pounds during a month of eating nothing but McDonalds. Good movie.

The danger with high-protein diets is that protein is the hardest thing to turn into blood sugar. Everything has to turn into glucose eventually for the body to use it, but protein is the slowest. Eating too much protein can overwork your system.

Anyway, I took a nutrition class a couple of years ago, and I was a little disappointed at how overgeneralized things can be. Some people feel better when they eat more carbs, like Nikki. I feel good when I eat lots of saturated fat and limit my vegetables. Veggies weaken my appetite too much, so I don't eat enough.

  3. And I thought I changed this to my real name. This is Michael Davison. And good luck!

I also forgot--you didn't say if you were drinking lots of water. I'll never forget the page in my nutrition textbook on situations where your body needs more water. "Cold temperatures, hot temperatures, increasing physical activity, sick, decreasing physical activity, pregnancy, dieting..." Something endless like that. :)

  4. Michael, I definitely saw fat head after Nikki recommended it to me! I liked the idea of it, but I'm having a hard time giving up my fruits.. but I figure fruits are better carbs than carbs that come from processed bread, right?
And yes, I'm trying to drink 100 oz of water a day... which is definitely a challenge for me. Thanks so much for the tips!
